the only time i really encountered a sandstorm when i was there was in kuwait before my unit even got into iraq.
i was sleeping off the jetlag in a huge quonset hut and woke up to the whole roof shacking.
i heard later that was the worst sandstorm they had had in years.
when i was in basra, all we had was just dust clouds that came in. nothing violent. just really hard to see (and sometimes breath).
